The Peace That Surpasses Understanding
“These things I have spoken to you,
that in me you may have peace.
In the world you will have tribulation;
but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
How can one have peace in the midst of troubles? It is a peace that can only be had from God himself. He specifically says that it is NOT the kind of peace that the world gives.
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you,
NOT AS THE WORLD GIVES do I give to you.”
John 14:27
What is peace? Ask most people and they would say it’s the absence of trouble. As long as things are going ok, they would say that they have peace.
But that is not the peace that comes from God. The peace that comes from God overcomes all troubles. It is not a soulish thing, it doesn’t abide in the emotions. It is a peace that nothing can touch.
How does one attain to this peace? The Word of God tells us that it comes through prayer and supplication, along with thanksgiving.
“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything
by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving,
let your requests be made known to God;
AND THE PEACE OF GOD,
which surpasses all understanding,
will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6-7
One can have this “peace of God” in any circumstance, anywhere, anytime, a peace that no one and no circumstance can touch.
Bring your trouble to the Lord. Pray about it, and bring to him thanksgiving no matter how deep your trouble is. Then the PEACE OF GOD will come upon you and you will be astounded that it surely does go beyond all understanding. It does not come from you, it does not come from circumstances, it comes from God himself.
